Teaching Aims and damands

1.Enable the students to learn and talk about Atlanta’s story.

2.Enable the students to improve their ability to learn by cooperating with others.

3. Try to be active and confiden in class activities.

Teaching Important Points

Enable the students to comprehend the story of Atlanta and get the general idea of the story of Atlanta and something about the beginning of the Olympic Games in the ancient time.

Teaching Difficult Point

To understand the content and finish filling-blanks exercises efficiently by listening the materials.

Teaching Methods

1.Skimming to get the general idea of the story of Atlanta.

2.Scanning to get detailed information and get to understand the story better.

3.Task-based methods to get the students to comprehend the passage and be able to retell the story in their own words.

Teaching Procedures

Step 1. Revision and leading in

1.      Revise the key words and expressions

2.      Leading in the topic by listening the theme song of 2008 Olympic games.

Step 2.  Reading The Story of Atlanta on Page 14

1.Leading in—Talk about the pictures on Page 14.

TPlease turn to Page 14.Look at the first picture.What can you see in it?

SsTwo people. the king and his daughter named Atlanta .and they are talking about their marriage.

Now let’s look at the second picture

SsWe can see a young man named Hippomenes and a fairy called the Goddess of Love who is giving something to Hippomenes. 

S4The story is about Atlanta who races to marry the man who can run faster than her.In order to win the raceHippomenes asked for help from the Goddess of love.

2.Skimming

Get the students to read the story and find the answers to the following questions.

1Who was Atlanta?

2What was she good at?

3Who did she want to marry?

4From whom did Hippomenes ask for help?

Step 3.Listening practising

1.listen to the tape of the rest story of Atlanta and write down the main idea.

2. Listen again and finsh the blanks.

Step 4.Explanation  

  Explain the usages of marry ,bargain ,pick up and deserve:

 

Step 5 Assignment

We’ve learned more about a Greek story in the ancient Olympics—Atlanta’s story.After classI would like you to read the story fluently and retell the story(EX.p17).
